Tyroc is moisture- and mold-resistant subfloor made from a fiberglass-reinforced magnesium oxide (MgO) panel bonded to a substrate comprised of 60% post-consumer rubber and 40% post-consumer polyethylene. The molded rubber substrate has a grooved pattern to allow airflow so moisture can drain or evaporate away. Tyroc can be installed above or below grade and over cracks or pitted concrete, where appropriate, providing a vapor- and moisture-impermeable surface with excellent sound dampening, and serving as a thermal break between concrete and flooring. The 48" x 16" x ½" panels weigh 10.5 pounds and come with a limited 30-year warranty.

ECOR Environmental Structural Panels (ESPs) are made from 100% recycled cellulose from sources such as cardboard, newspaper, and forest byproducts. The cellulose is heated, pressurized, and formed into panels that can be used in place of standard wood, particleboard, fiberboard, and other materials. These formaldehyde-free panels are made without the use of adhesives and can be used as is, or coated with paint, clear finishes for moisture resistance, or other high-performance coatings. They are available in 2' x 8' x 1/8" and 2' x 4' x 1/8" dimensions for its flat (FlatCOR) panels and 2' x 8' x 1-5/8" for its wavy (WavCOR) panels. Class A fire-rated panels, custom sizes, shapes, veneers, and other options are also available.

  • Stramit CAFboard
    Stramit USA, LLC
CAFboard is a compressed-fiber panel manufactured by Stramit from wheat straw. The company markets the boards for SIPs, door cores, interior sheathing, acoustical panels, and many other applications. CAFboard is processed under high heat and pressure, which convert lignin already present in the straw into a natural binder—no binder is added, and testing shows zero VOC emissions. The boards have a STC ratings of 32 (for thinner boards) and 45 (for thicker boards); and a one- or two-hour fire rating (depending on thickness) based on ASTM E119/UL263. The boards contain no added flame retardants. CAFboard is available in densities from 15.6 to 40.5 pounds per cubic foot, and Stramit USA claims that the R-value of these panels ranges from R-2.32 to R-3.03. However, the company couldn't provide a lab report backing those claims, and we think they are exaggerated—see our full review for more discussion.

Stramit also claims high resistance to mold and mildew without added chemicals, low moisture absorption, natural termite resistance, and a negative carbon footprint. CAFboard panels range in thickness from 1.000" to 3.125" and are available in two standard widths—31.50" and 42.24". The company also incorporates CAFboard into two other Stramit products: the CAFsteel panelized building system and the CAFquiet interior partition system, which features an STC rating of 50.

Ecocell achieves a Class A fire rating (ASTM E-84 Standard) using borates, which also prevent pest intrusion. Ecocell blankets are R-3.7 while the batts are R-3.6, with a density of 2.5 pcf. The batts also achieve an acoustical rating of STC 50. Batts are available in 16" and 24" widths (0.4m and 0.6m) and 94" and 96" (2.4m) lengths. Blankets are 48" x 96" (1.2m x 2.4m) or 48" x 108" (1.2m x 2.7m).

    FilterPave
FilterPave is a porous pavement that can support pedestrian and light vehicular traffic loads. With a compressive strength of 1,160 psi and a flexural strength of 508 psi, the pavement is designed for applications like sidewalks, patios, bike paths, and driveways. The poured-in-place material has a porosity of 39% and an SRI of 29. According to tests conducted by the University of Central Florida, FilterPave provides 6.2 inches per hour of infiltration even with excessive sediment loading and 33.1 inches per hour after a rejuvenation cycle. The pavement is a mix of 100% post-consumer glass and regionally sourced stone and aggregate, bonded with a polyurethane elastomeric resin. FilterPave Glass Series has over 20% glass, and FilterPave Stone Series may be mixed with up to 20% glass.

    Ecovative Design LLC
Ecovative offers Grow-In-Place Mushroom Insulation for pre-fabricated, controlled conditions. The foam, which consists of mycelium (mushroom “roots”) bonded to agricultural byproducts, takes about a month to grow in a factory setting, according to the company. Then it is allowed to dry out, producing a solidified, airtight, structural wall assembly. The insulation is Class A fire rated without any added flame retardants, has an R-vale of 3.6 per inch, and a compressive strength of 0.3–6.7 psi at 10% (ASTM D695). Growing the insulation allows it to be self-sealing and reduces thermal bridging.

    Fellert USA
The makers of Fellert Acoustical Plaster claim their product solves cracking problems while also providing an exceptional NRC rating of 0.85–0.90. Acoustical plaster provides a highly reflective interior that also absorbs sound and reduces noise even in large, open space, but its seamless look often doesn’t last because plasters tend to crack with normal settling and other loads. With a backing made of acoustical fiberglass board and spray-applied plaster incorporating perlite, bentonite, and post-consumer recycled cotton, Fellert Acoustical Plaster can flex—with an internal stress rating of 2.1 according to ASTM D6991-05. The product is installed with PVC-based C-channels.
