Some products help us use other products or materials more efficiently. For example, drywall clips allow the elimination of corner studs, engineered stair stringers reduce lumber waste, and concrete pigments and polishing systems can turn concrete slabs into attractive finished floors. We also recognize some products, like vacuum plumbing systems, which use less material than their conventional counterparts. Many products with this attribute are fairly unique, so we bring a skeptical eye to manufacturer claims, but not a specific standard.

    BubbleDeck uses a matrix of plastic spheres, steel reinforcement, and concrete that work together to form a “lightweight biaxial slab” that behaves like a solid concrete slab. The spheres act as voids and the concrete and steel that surround them essentially form “I-beams” in two directions. BubbleDeck can displace 25% or more of the concrete of a conventional deck, so its use can result in significant CO2 reduction as well as lighter decks that may require thinner columns or less foundation, resulting in further reductions in concrete use. This decking is prefabricated offsite, offering good quality control, before moving to the jobsite, where the remainder of the cement is added. When finished, BubbleDeck looks the same as conventional decking. BubbleDeck can be used in slabs ranging from 9 to 36 inches thick. The slabs are custom-engineered depending on the job but typical dimensions range from 8'–10' wide by 27'–45' long.

The company could not provide GreenSpec with a measure of VOC content, but based on the ingredients, we don't anticipate that it would be very high.

    Open Joist Triforce is a open-web, parallel-chord truss with solid-wood diagonal struts. It is most commonly used as for joists, but can also be used as rafters to achieve superinsulated roofs. The solid-wood 2x2 diagonal struts are attached with finger-jointed, glued grooves, potentially increasing durability when contrasted with OSB or metal plates that could degrade or corrode over time. Each Open Joist Triforce joist includes a 34-1/8" OSB panel at one end that allows the length to be easily modified, thus allowing more economical, standard-dimension manufacturing. FSC certification is available with Open Joist Triforce products.

The larger GM3-12 runs on diesel and produces 4"x8"x12", 24 lb. bricks at a rate of 5 per minute. The dimensional precision on all sides is 1/64". According to the company the blocks can be placed directly in a wall without any advance curing time and the tongue-and-groove design allows for mortarless installation.

    EcoCore access panels from Tate Access Floors incorporate small capsules with a biobased phase-change material (PCM). They are designed to help mitigate the effects of solar heat gain near the perimeter of a highly glazed building that has an underfloor air distribution (UFAD) system. The panels replace Tate's typical access panels in certain areas where direct sunlight will likely be heating the area. If properly placed, the PCM panels could reduce the peak cooling load, allowing for a more efficient system design. Careful placement and accurate modeling will be needed for these PCM products to work as designed. The PCM in EcoCore panels has a phase-change temperature of 75.2°F, and the panels are available in two sizes. The 24" square, 1-5/8" deep panels contain 2.3 lbs of PCM and absorb up to 141 Btu of thermal energy and weigh 8.2 lbs/ft2. Each 24" square panel absorbs an additional 6.7 Btu/°F. The 60 cm square, 1.28" deep panels contain 2.4 lbs of PCM and absorb up to 147 Btu of thermal energy and weigh 9.6 lbs/ft2. Each 60 cm square panel absorbs an additional 7.4 Btu/°F. By comparison, four square feet of 4-inch-thick concrete slab provides about 360 Btu of heat storage over a 10°F rise in temperature. An electrically conductive epoxy paint finish protects the panel from corrosion. The panel and understructure system contain a minimum of 30% recycled content. According to the manufacturer, the PCM has a lifespan of more than 100,000 phase changes.

    Ductal is an ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) made from portland cement, silica fume (a byproduct of electric arc furnaces), silica flour, silica sand, water, and polycarboxolate high-range water reducers (superplasticizers) that help cement flow. Lafarge also adds metal or polyvinyl alcohol fibers to provide structure. According to the company, Ductal has a compressive strength ten times higher than that of normal concrete, and its flexural strength is three to four times higher. Ductal is virtually impermeable to water or chlorides, is relatively light, and can be formed into just about any shape while maintaining its properties, but it is expensive, making it appropriate for corrosive environments, such as marine or salted roadways, and cladding in high-end buildings. Ductal is highly durable, with the company estimating its lifespan at 1,000 years.
