With energy-consuming equipment, such as water heaters and refrigerators, we have good data on energy consumption and can set clear standards accordingly. In some product categories—clothes washers, for example—Energy Star standards were adopted because those standards provide a high enough threshold to represent just the very top segment of the product market (less than 10%). In other product categories—e.g., refrigerators and dishwashers—we set a higher threshold than ENERGY STAR: for example, exceeding those standards by 10% or 20%. With lighting and lighting control equipment, certain generic products qualify, such as compact fluorescent lamps and occupancy/daylighting controls, while in other categories only a subset of products qualify. In some cases, products that meet the energy efficiency requirements are excluded, because of evidence of poor performance or durability. Microturbines are included here because of the potential for cogeneration (combined heat and power) that they offer.

    Design Envelope from Armstrong Fluid Technology optimizes system performance through the use of demand-based pumps and “Intelligent Variable Speed” (IVS) controllers. With the IVS controller system, the controls and pump are integrated into one unit and there are no physical sensors. The flow rate is adjusted using an algorithm that varies the pump speed based on water pressure using predetermined pressure setpoints that maximize overall system performance. Design Envelope is designed and programmed to operate most efficiently around 50% peak capacity, where there is largest demand, but the system also manages large loads when necessary. Armstrong Fluid Technology offers a variety of pump sizes to meet the needs of everything from residential/light commercial to large commercial applications.

    Dyson offers three touch-free electric hand dryers: the Airblade dB, Airblade V, and Airblade tap. All three use a 1400-watt motor and double life HEPA filters that remove 99.97% of the bacteria at 0.3 microns from the air used to dry hands. The AirBlade dB is the quietest, operating at 81 dBA compared to 84 dBA of the other two models. Airblade V complies with ADA requirements without requiring additional recessing kits because it protrudes only 4 inches from the wall. The Airblade tap attaches to the sink and acts as both the faucet and the hand dryer, preventing users from dripping water on the floor as they move to a separate drying area. The Airblade tap also limits water flow rate to 1.06 gal/min and dryers hands within 14 seconds. All three hand dryers are certified under NSF P335: Hygienic Commercial Hand Dryers.
