Once we’ve considered low-emitting products and those that prevent moisture problems, we also consider green ventilation products, filters, radon mitigation equipment, and other equipment and devices that help to remove pollutants or introduce fresh air. Because ventilation equipment is standard, we only recognize products that are particularly efficient or quiet or which have other benefits, such as heat recovery.

    Air Pohoda USA, LLC
    Air Pohoda offers high-performance HRVs and ERVs, including the Ultima 240E iERV (intelligent energy-recovery ventilator). The Ultima 240E operates at 95% efficiency and is the first ERV with adjustable humidity control. These units can provide 240 cfm of ventilation using a triangular-shaped core with channels that capture the condensate so the moisture can either be drained away or directed back into the living space. Because the humidity can be controlled, the 240E can operate in any climate; the core does not contain perforations so dust will not clog the unit over time; and the unit does not freeze down to 10°F and does not require a preheater. It also uses an electronically commutated motor (ECM) so it is very efficient, and six-inch ducts to deliver good airflow. These units come with a 25-year warranty. The company also offers 240 and 60 cfm HRVs, both of which use ECMs.

The standard hood purifies air at a rate of 471 cfm with four filters, and the filtration capacity can be multiplied by adding additional modules. One module can trap 0.096 ounces of 35% HCI before becoming saturated. The technology passes face velocity at 60 ft/min, keeping the user safe by spreading air suction across the surface of the ceiling. Installed through 12" thick or greater exterior walls using a 6" opening, they are wired in groups of two or four so that while one fan exhausts, the other supplies air. Heat/cold is absorbed in one direction and the airflow is reversed every 70 seconds, balancing the heating/cooling with filtered fresh air, according to the company. Intended for Passive House or super-insulated homes, one pair covers 500–600 ft2 (8' ceilings). These units also work well in retrofit applications.

    Boral manufactures both concrete and clay roofing tiles in a variety of styles and colors. Boral's concrete tiles use either fly ash or blast-furnace slag (depending on where they are manufactured) in place of some of the portland cement. Most colors of Boral clay roofing tiles are certified at the Cradle to Cradle Gold level.

    BoralPure "smog-eating" tiles have a cementitious coating that contains titanium dioxide, a highly reactive substance that breaks down organic compounds—everything from smog-forming chemicals to nuisance microbes such as algae and mildew. The coating also sheds even small amounts water, which can lift dirt off as well. Because of these properties, BoralPure tiles may require less cleaning than typical roofing tiles.

    Although Boral states that a 2,000-square-foot roof can offset the smog-forming emissions of a car driven 10,800 miles, that claim is based on lab testing. These products have not yet been shown to significantly affect outdoor air quality in the real world.

The efficiency is thanks in part to an ECM motor. The Novus 300 can move up to 177 cfm, and comes standard with a MERV 7/8 filter, but an optional MERV 13 filter is available. An optional humidity heat exchanger is also available. The Novus 300 comes with a two-year warranty.
