Just how low the VOC level needs to be for a given product to qualify for inclusion in GreenSpec depends on the product category. For most products, we require certification to California’s health-based emissions standard, CDPH Std Method v1.1 standard (also referred to as California Section 01350), which tests a product’s resultant VOC concentrations in the space after a given period of time. For wet-applied products like paints, caulks, and adhesives, we still also look for VOC content instead of, or in addition to, verified low emissions; this is because emissions testing doesn’t adequately test initial offgassing, and VOC content is currently the only widely available proxy.

Distributed in the U.S. by Four Seven Five, Pro Clima offers a full line of VOC-free, pressure-sensitive air barrier tapes designed for interior and exterior use in wall assemblies marketed toward Passive House construction projects. Most tapes are 2-3/8" (60 mm) wide, but the tapes range in width from 1"–3-3/8" (25–85 mm). Tapes with separate backing papers for use in corners are available. Pro Clima tapes adhere to a wide range of substrates, including OSB, soft wood, and masonry, although Pro Clima recommends the use of its Tescon Primer in some cases. Tescon RP primer is fluid-applied and requires no drying time before the tapes can be applied over it. According to Four Seven Five, Pro Clima tapes bond in several hours and, once dry, adhere extremely well. However, long-term testing data to support their durability is not available.

Apex siding is a low-maintenance, durable alternative to vinyl siding. Made with Ultrex fiberglass (which is also used in Marvin windows), the company claims Apex is significantly stronger and more impact resistant than vinyl, has almost no thermal expansion or contraction, and is not damaged by moisture. It is installed using the company’s clip system that allows drainage and ventilation between the siding and moisture barrier, and comes with a fade-resistant acrylic finish incorporated into the material. Apex is available in ten colors and in 4" and 7" sizes with smooth or wood grain finishes. It comes with a limited 50-year warranty on the substrate and 15-year warranty on the finish.

ECOR Environmental Structural Panels (ESPs) are made from 100% recycled cellulose from sources such as cardboard, newspaper, and forest byproducts. The cellulose is heated, pressurized, and formed into panels that can be used in place of standard wood, particleboard, fiberboard, and other materials. These formaldehyde-free panels are made without the use of adhesives and can be used as is, or coated with paint, clear finishes for moisture resistance, or other high-performance coatings. They are available in 2' x 8' x 1/8" and 2' x 4' x 1/8" dimensions for its flat (FlatCOR) panels and 2' x 8' x 1-5/8" for its wavy (WavCOR) panels. Stramit USA, LLC
CAFboard is a compressed-fiber panel manufactured by Stramit from wheat straw. The company markets the boards for SIPs, door cores, interior sheathing, acoustical panels, and many other applications. CAFboard is processed under high heat and pressure, which convert lignin already present in the straw into a natural binder—no binder is added, and testing shows zero VOC emissions. The boards have a STC ratings of 32 (for thinner boards) and 45 (for thicker boards); and a one- or two-hour fire rating (depending on thickness) based on ASTM E119/UL263. The boards contain no added flame retardants. CAFboard is available in densities from 15.6 to 40.5 pounds per cubic foot, and Stramit USA claims that the R-value of these panels ranges from R-2.32 to R-3.03. However, the company couldn't provide a lab report backing those claims, and we think they are exaggerated—see our full review for more discussion.

Stramit also claims high resistance to mold and mildew without added chemicals, low moisture absorption, natural termite resistance, and a negative carbon footprint. CAFboard panels range in thickness from 1.000" to 3.125" and are available in two standard widths—31.50" and 42.24". The company also incorporates CAFboard into two other Stramit products: the CAFsteel panelized building system and the CAFquiet interior partition system, which features an STC rating of 50.

    Ecovative Design LLC
Ecovative offers Grow-In-Place Mushroom Insulation for pre-fabricated, controlled conditions. The foam, which consists of mycelium (mushroom “roots”) bonded to agricultural byproducts, takes about a month to grow in a factory setting, according to the company. Then it is allowed to dry out, producing a solidified, airtight, structural wall assembly. The insulation is Class A fire rated without any added flame retardants, has an R-vale of 3.6 per inch, and a compressive strength of 0.3–6.7 psi at 10% (ASTM D695). Growing the insulation allows it to be self-sealing and reduces thermal bridging.

    KI
KI, manufacturer of commercial furniture, offers chair lines made using a petroleum-free polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) plastic called AirCarbon. The raw materials used to make AirCarbon are taken from agriculturally sourced methane, thereby sequestering this powerful greenhouse gas. While the standard AirCarbon plastic is biodegradable, the plastic used for KI's chairs is engineered for durability and is not biodegradable. It is carbon-negative and recyclable, according to the company. The Strive and Grazie lines will be the first products to use AirCarbon. They are available as stacking chairs, stools, and in other styles. KI's conventional chairs are Indoor Advantage Gold certified for low emissions; certification is anticipated for KI chairs.
