Stormwater runoff from the built environment, often mixed with contaminants, has a damaging effect on local and downstream ecosystems. Porous paving products and vegetated roofing systems result in less rainwater runoff and thereby reduce surface water pollution. Stormwater treatment systems reduce pollutant levels in any water that is released. Again, quantifiable benefit and a strong track record are important determinants here of “green.”

PRM, or PhosphoReduc, is a filtration medium specialized for removing phosphorous from stormwater. It can be used alone in stormwater systems (or wastewater systems) or added to other filtration media to boost their performance. Made from porous waste slag, the material can also be used as a phosphorous-rich soil amendment at the end of its life cycle.

FocalPoint is a high-flow-rate biofiltration system designed to provide the performance of natural stormwater filtration on a very small footprint, which saves on first costs as well as ongoing maintenance costs. A fibrous, shallow root system harbors a complex ecosystem of microorganisms that aerobically break down organic nutrients, harmful bacteria, nitrogen compounds, and phosphorous. Supporting that system is a deep layer (one to four feet) of the Element1 biofiltration medium—which consists mostly of coarse sand, along with some finer sand as well as about 10% peat moss—topped by hardwood mulch that catches most of the oil and sediment. Underneath the medium is a layer of gravel that helps prevent the clogging that has plagued slow-flow-rate bioretention systems. An open-mesh textile separates the various media from the modular milk-crate-like under-drain system. The crates can be stacked or placed side by side to provide more volume to collect and store the treated water before it’s released for infiltration, detention, or harvesting. FocalPoint has been tested to both the TARP and TAPE protocols and removes 73% of total phosphorous, 43% of total nitrogen, 85% of total suspended solids, 57% of total metals, 90% of oil and grease, and 95% of bacteria.

    Stone Recyclers
Stone Recyclers takes waste from granite counter-top fabricators and processes them for use as split stone, pavers, flooring, and other products. The company can cut the granite into a variety of patterns, and leftover material is crushed for use as fill or decoration. This recycled stone is 1-1/4" thick and can be used with polished side up or down depending on the application. Color and matching depends on availability. This granite comes with a lifetime warranty.

Xero Flor green roofs utilize pre-vegetated mats on a textile base so that the mats roll out like sod. The system's components consist of a geotextile carrier, a water retention fleece, drain mat, and root barrier, all made of 90% recycled fiber content. Vegetation is regionally sourced. The system weighs 8–10 psf and can be installed on slopes of up to 45 degrees. Xero Flor mats can be custom sized.

    FilterPave
FilterPave is a porous pavement that can support pedestrian and light vehicular traffic loads. With a compressive strength of 1,160 psi and a flexural strength of 508 psi, the pavement is designed for applications like sidewalks, patios, bike paths, and driveways. The poured-in-place material has a porosity of 39% and an SRI of 29. According to tests conducted by the University of Central Florida, FilterPave provides 6.2 inches per hour of infiltration even with excessive sediment loading and 33.1 inches per hour after a rejuvenation cycle. The pavement is a mix of 100% post-consumer glass and regionally sourced stone and aggregate, bonded with a polyurethane elastomeric resin. FilterPave Glass Series has over 20% glass, and FilterPave Stone Series may be mixed with up to 20% glass.

EZ Roll Grass and Gravel Pavers are permeable paving systems that provide a honeycomb matrix to retain grass or gravel and prevent soil compaction while allowing water to pass through. The product averages approximately 70% recycled HDPE plastic, though this varies by color and availability. EZ Roll Grass Pavers, with an empty compressive strength of 57,890 psf, are recommended for bike paths, driveways, parking lots, and access roads, as well as soil stabilization and erosion-control applications. EZ Roll Gravel Pavers, with an empty compressive strength of 66,000 psf, are additionally recommended for vehicle wash-down areas and boat access. Gravel pavers are available in tan, black, brick red, and gray, but some colors contain no recycled material. EZ Roll Pavers are 1" high and come in various dimensions, most commonly 4'x150' rolls.

Columbia Green offers two versions of its Advanced Vegetative Roof System (AVRS). The AVRS Tray System uses interlocking, overlapping modular trays that allow overfill so deeper growth medium can be added, up to 8" total depth. The trays also allow airflow to the tray bottoms to improve plant health and manage wind uplift. The company’s Multilayer system is engineered with a drainage layer and a water retention layer. Both of these products contain high amounts of recycled content; the trays and multilayered drainage layer are 88% and 40% post-consumer polypropylene, respectively, and the multilayered retention layer is 100% pre-consumer polypropylene. The growing media are chosen depending on project needs and plants can be regionally grown.

Stalite manufactures PermaTill in North Carolina using 80% post-industrial recycled fines from the company's production of slate aggregate,15% compost, and 5% pine bark fines. Available for extensive or intensive green roofs, PermaTill has a high cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of 26.9 milliequivalents per 100g, which the company says promotes nutrient retention, reducing the need for fertilizer inputs while allowing high permeability and aeration.

    Cutting Edge
Cutting Edge grass seed is a blend of non-genetically-modified Kentucky blue grass and fescue varieties that create a root system capable of growing 48 inches deep—reaching areas where water is more likely to be found in drought conditions. The company uses an organic seed coating that provides hydration and contains endophytes, a naturally occurring fungus that repels insects, and rhizomes that encourage root growth. The combination of slow growth and drought-, insect-, and disease-resistance significantly reduces maintenance, according to the company. Cutting Edge grass seed is for use in cool season and transitional zones. Note that because the company will not divulge its proprietary cultivars, Cutting Edge is not available in states that require full disclosure of grass varieties.

    Todd Valley Farms
Bella Bluegrass, distributed by Todd Valley Farms, is a drought-resistant bluegrass that spreads via rhizomes rather than seeds. According to the company, this grass is not genetically modified, and it grows well laterally, “self-repairs,” and stops growing after reaching 3.5"–4", reducing the amount of mowing required by 50%–80%. It also requires 20%–30% less water than standard bluegrass. Bella Bluegrass is best used in colder climates and is available as sod, plugs, and Live Roof modules.

    Filterra Bioretention Systems
Filterra Bioretention Systems use a combination of filtration media and landscape vegetation to treat urban stormwater runoff by removing bacteria, metals, nutrients, and suspended solids. The system's standard 7' x 7' footprint, in which a bush or tree is planted, fits into parking lots and curbside landscaping. The inlet accepts surface runoff and the contained water is then treated by the plant's roots, which absorb organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorous, and metals, before it filters into the ground through drainage stone. Filterra Bioretention Systems may be used in new construction or retrofit applications.

The Nutrient Separating Baffle Box removes leaves and debris from stormwater, sequestering them from water flow to prevent leaching of nitrogen and phosphorus. The unit captures a wide variety of pollutants, including sediment, debris, and hydrocarbons. During the high water flow of a storm, the Baffle Box's turbulence deflectors prevent previously captured sediment from becoming re-suspended in passing water, and hydrocarbons are skimmed off and absorbed by a replaceable floating boom. Existing stormwater systems may be retrofitted with a Baffle Box made of concrete or fiberglass in a range of sizes.
