    • Remove facet Increases resilience
View: GridList

While resilience—the ability to weather natural disasters and maintain livable conditions in the aftermath of disruptive events—is mostly an issue of building design and community preparedness, certain products can help. For example, almost all heating systems require electricity to operate even if their primary fuel is oil, gas, or wood pellets; systems that allow operation even if grid electricity is not available are more resilient in the event of power outages. Rainwater harvesting, water storage, composting toilets, and waterless urinals contribute to resilience not only in drought-prone areas but also during power outages in any home dependent on well water. Solar water heating systems that can operate without utility power, and back-up power systems that are more energy-efficient than standard generators, may have this attribute.

  • FloLogic Automatic Water Shutoff System
    FloLogic, Inc.
The FloLogic automatic water shutoff system connects to a single point on the plumbing bringing water into a home, where it monitors water flow and detects changes that could indicate a burst pipe or other issue. FloLogic comes pre-programmed with "home" and "away" settings—which can be custom-programmed—allowing water to flow for certain amounts of time; if the flow exceeds that limit, the system's shutoff valve stops water from entering the home and an alarm is sounded. FloLogic can be connected to a home security system, includes a manual override, and can run on backup battery power for up to a week in the case of a power outage.

    Hearth & Home Technologies
Quadra-Fire’s 3100 and 4300 Millenium ACC non-catalytic wood stoves use four-stage combustion while having particulate emissions of only 1.1 g/hr. The 3100 is for areas up to 2,600 ft2 and has a heating output of 51,100 Btu, and the 4300 has a heating output of 56,000 and is for areas up to 3,000 ft2. The company’s Four-Point Burn System consists of a primary burn zone at bed of coals, a secondary burn zone, a tertiary burn over the baffles, and the final burn zone above the baffle, which helps eliminate fine particulates. Both stoves come with Automatic Combustion Control (ACC), a heat-management system that controls the airflow for an efficient start and consistent burn cycle.

The Original Rainwater Pillow is a fabric rainwater storage cistern for irrigation, toilet flushing, and other non-potable uses. Made of a polyester scrim coated on both sides with PVC, the pillows are flexible, resistant to freezing to –30°F according to the manufacturer, and highly durable. Standard pillows (1,000–3,000 gallons) are sold with a complete kit including two 9" filters, one 1/2-hp 7-amp pump, a remote control, flexible hose, and fittings; the 1,000-gallon pillow measures 10' x 8' x 2'. The system collects rainwater from a building's gutters, filters it, and channels it into the pillow. Two outlets prevent overfilling; a hose connected to the system's pump will provide 10–12 gpm. The product is available in custom sizes up to 200,000 gallons.
