    • Remove facet Increases resilience
View: GridList

While resilience—the ability to weather natural disasters and maintain livable conditions in the aftermath of disruptive events—is mostly an issue of building design and community preparedness, certain products can help. For example, almost all heating systems require electricity to operate even if their primary fuel is oil, gas, or wood pellets; systems that allow operation even if grid electricity is not available are more resilient in the event of power outages. Rainwater harvesting, water storage, composting toilets, and waterless urinals contribute to resilience not only in drought-prone areas but also during power outages in any home dependent on well water. Solar water heating systems that can operate without utility power, and back-up power systems that are more energy-efficient than standard generators, may have this attribute.

    Assa Abloy
Assa Abloy offers power-over-ethernet electronic access-control locks, including the SARGENT Profile Series v.S1, the SARGENT Passport 1000 P1, and the Corbin Russwin Access 700 PIP1. Ethernet data cables carry low-voltage electricity to power the lock as well as transmitting data to and from the devices using a facility’s already existing wired and wireless local area network (LAN). Each PoE door typically uses about one watt per door in standby mode, saving more than 150 kWh per year compared to a traditionally wired system. Ethernet power loads are low enough that a modest uninterruptable power supply (UPS) may be able to maintain electronic-access functionality in the case of a power outage.

    Full Circle Composting Toilets
Full Circle offers a waterless composting toilet with modular, interchangeable composting containers. The bathroom commode, available in wood, porcelain, or plastic, uses wood shavings for a "dry flush" and a 4-watt ventilation fan to manage odor. A single commode connects via a sealed plastic chute to a roll-off container the size of a garbage pail stored below in a basement or crawl space. When a container is filled, it is disconnected, capped, and set aside to compost. A new container is wheeled into place and connected to the chute. Both active and resting containers are sealed and connected with the exhaust, and the air-handling system draws air through up through the entire compost bin, supplying oxygen to all corners of the container for complete composting. Containers with completed compost can be wheeled outside and emptied onto landscaping. Maintenance takes 15–30 minutes and happens every six months to a year, according to the company. An electronic light indicates when it is time to swap compost bins. A divided, urine diverting bowl is available, to direct urine into a dedicated drain for storage, treatment, and reuse as fertilizer.

  • FloLogic Automatic Water Shutoff System
    FloLogic, Inc.
The FloLogic automatic water shutoff system connects to a single point on the plumbing bringing water into a home, where it monitors water flow and detects changes that could indicate a burst pipe or other issue. FloLogic comes pre-programmed with "home" and "away" settings—which can be custom-programmed—allowing water to flow for certain amounts of time; if the flow exceeds that limit, the system's shutoff valve stops water from entering the home and an alarm is sounded. FloLogic can be connected to a home security system, includes a manual override, and can run on backup battery power for up to a week in the case of a power outage.

Quadra-Fire’s 3100 and 4300 Millenium ACC non-catalytic wood stoves use four-stage combustion while having particulate emissions of only 1.1 g/hr. The 3100 is for areas up to 2,600 ft2 and has a heating output of 51,100 Btu, and the 4300 has a heating output of 56,000 and is for areas up to 3,000 ft2. The company’s Four-Point Burn System consists of a primary burn zone at bed of coals, a secondary burn zone, a tertiary burn over the baffles, and the final burn zone above the baffle, which helps eliminate fine particulates. Both stoves come with Automatic Combustion Control (ACC), a heat-management system that controls the airflow for an efficient start and consistent burn cycle.
