What Makes a Building Product Green

Asbestos and lead are among the most common hazardous materials encountered in older buildings. Use of asbestos as an insulating and fireproofing material, and lead as a primary ingredient in paint, ended in the 1970s as awareness of these dangers grew. Lead and asbestos remediation in buildings should generally be done by professionals, through either removal or encapsulation.

GreenSpec lists products that aid in managing lead and asbestos with minimal additional environmental and health risks.
