  • Some products help us use other products or materials more efficiently. For example, drywall clips allow the elimination of corner studs, engineered stair stringers reduce lumber waste, and concrete pigments and polishing systems can turn concrete slabs into attractive finished floors. We also recognize some products, like vacuum plumbing systems, which use less material than their conventional counterparts. Many products with this attribute are fairly unique, so we bring a skeptical eye to manufacturer claims, but not a specific standard.

The ButtHanger, a simple device made from wood strapping and metal cross pieces, eliminates the single most problematic aspect of interior finish work—the drywall butt joint. By enabling the laying out and hanging of board finish ends to space rather than to framing, the Butthanger bends the butt ends inward about 1/8". This changes a labor-intensive and difficult 3'-wide mud joint into a quick and easy 1'-wide one while both reducing cut-off waste and joint compound used for butt joints. EZ-Backer is an all-steel commercial version of the ButtHanger.

09 29 13: Gypsum Board Accessories

Using drywall clips at corners and partition-wall intersections allows a reduction in steel or wood studs, saving resources and reducing costs. Used at corners, drywall clips allow slight movement of drywall panels to accommodate expansion and contraction of framing members, minimizing cracking and call-backs. In addition, drywall clips and stops do not take up space that insulation could occupy in wall cavities where interior partitions meet exterior walls.

GreenSpec lists products that are accessories for gypsum board construction with various environmental features or benefits in use such as the benefits offered by drywall clips or "stops."
