  • All toilets and most showerheads today meet the federal water-efficiency standards, but not all of these products perform satisfactorily. With toilets and showerheads, we include products that meet or exceed WaterSense standards, which includes performance requirements—although we go beyond WaterSense where there are issues not adequately addressed by the program. We also look for other products that conserve potable water, such as rainwater catchment and graywater recovery and reuse systems.

The Ecoblue Cube is a small urinal block that contains naturally occurring bacteria, water softeners, perfume, and biodegradable surfactants. The bacteria multiply to form a clear biofilm that lines the bowl, trap, and pipes of flushing urinals, breaking down uric acid and thereby eliminating odor and reducing maintenance costs and associated environmental problems. Use of the Cube eliminates the need to flush most urinals except during routine cleaning. When upgrading to higher efficiency flushing urinals is not possible, the Cube offers an alternative. According to the manufacturer, it can also obviate the need for trap-seal fluid in waterless urinals. Available in buckets of 50, the Cubes should be used in conjunction with Ecoblue's cleaning product.

Maintaining water-saving plumbing fixtures is vital to their performance. According to the EPA, a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per month. These leaks place a strain on water supplies and treatment facilities, so detecting and repairing them quickly is critical.

GreenSpec lists products here that either help maintain hygiene or detect leaks in toilets and urinals and avoid common toxic ingredients.
