Pre-consumer (also called “post-industrial”) recycling refers to the reuse of industrial by-products, as distinguished from material that has been in consumer use. The iron-ore slag used to make mineral wool insulation and the fly ash used to make concrete are examples of post-industrial recycled materials. While post-consumer recycled content is preferable, a product that uses pre-consumer content or recycles a seldom-used waste product, especially in an area where recycled products are hard to find, can be considered green.
Excluded from this category, by FTC definitions, is the use of scrap within the same manufacturing process from which it was generated—material that would typically have gone back into the manufacturing process anyway.
Nova Walkway Pads
EcoStar produces Nova Walkway Pads from Starloy, a proprietary polymer made from 100% recycled post-industrial rubber and plastic. Nova is nonabsorbent, impact-resistant, nonslip, and interlocks for easy installation in areas such as roofs. EcoStar is a division of Carlisle SynTec, Inc. As with other flooring products made from recycled automobile tires, installation is only recommended in semi-enclosed spaces, well-ventilated indoor spaces, or outdoors.
Roof walk boards made from recycled-tire rubber or other post-consumer waste products make good use of waste material in a durable, reusable product. Most products listed by GreenSpec contain over 90% recycled content, often from used tires. They’re typically applied over membrane roofs to prevent damage while maintaining roofing or roof-mounted mechanical equipment. They are very effective for walkways on green roofs. Residential uses also include poolsides and concrete decks. These heavy duty mats come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses.
While product emissions can be a concern with recycled rubber in products used inside, that's not a concern for exterior roof walk boards.
