Just how low the VOC level needs to be for a given product to qualify for inclusion in GreenSpec depends on the product category. For most products, we require certification to California’s health-based emissions standard, CDPH Std Method v1.1 standard (also referred to as California Section 01350), which tests a product’s resultant VOC concentrations in the space after a given period of time. For wet-applied products like paints, caulks, and adhesives, we still also look for VOC content instead of, or in addition to, verified low emissions; this is because emissions testing doesn’t adequately test initial offgassing, and VOC content is currently the only widely available proxy.

Tobias Green Interior Wall Finishes are non-toxic, odor-free, virtually VOC-free, trowelled-on wall finishing products. The limestone-, aggregate-, and-water-based products can be used as an alternative to paint or plaster and applied to most building substrates. The finishes are available in a variety of colors and can be applied to provide various textures. They are designed for the professional plastering contractor and are sold in 1-gallon and 5-gallon containers through a national sales network of building supply distributors and independent sales representatives.
09 25 00: Other Plastering
Lime plasters can have slightly lower embodied energy than portland-cement-based plasters, and they don't include petroleum-based ingredients, as acrylic plasters do. Integral natural pigments obviate the need for painting.

Repairing old plaster is preferable to material-intensive replacement, so some plaster repair systems are also included.
09 94 00: Decorative Finishing
Decorative finishes are typically high-grade, multicolored and/or textured coatings for interior and exterior applications. Textures and colors are achieved by proprietary mixtures of pigments, oils, and inorganic fillers.
Such products offer a durable and environmentally preferable alternative to common vinyl wall coverings, which offgas plasticizers and pose heightened health risks during a fire or end-of-life incineration.
Products listed here are waterborne and have relatively low-VOC content.
